    CORRELATION ANALYSIS BETWEEN THE MORPHOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HEAD OF NUCLEUS CAUDATUS AND THE INTENSITY OF PSYCHOTIC MANIFESTATION IN SCHIZOPHRENIA

    Introduction: One of the significant functional disorders of the central nervous system in patients with schizophrenia is the increased activity of the mesolimbic dopaminergic system. By the nigrostriatal pathway, the caudate nucleus is closely related to other dopaminergic systems of the brain. Since the function of caudate nucleus relies on the action of dopamine in the brain; the role of this anatomical structure in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia is not sufficiently clarified. The aim of this paper was to examine whether the caudate nucleus participates in the modulation of the intensity of psychotic manifestations in schizophrenia. Patients and Methods: The study included a total of thirty-one patients with schizophrenia. Diagnosis of the schizophrenia was based on the DSM-IVcriterion (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition), and the intensity of psychotic manifestations was evaluated by using Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). The size of the caudate nucleus was determined on axial non-contrast CT images on the surface of the largest cross-section using AutoCAD 2007 digital morphometry. The statistical data were processed by the SPSS 16.0 program package. The statistical conclusions are presented on the basis of two-tail p <0.05. Results:In this study, we have observed a negative correlation between the area as well as the perimeter of the left caudate nucleus head section and the intensity of the psychotic manifestations (area: regression coefficient B = -0.17, p = 0.050, perimeter: regression coefficient B = -0.010, p = 0.012). On the right hemisphere of the brain we observed only a negative correlation of the intensity of the psychotic manifestations from the perimeter of the head section of caudate nucleus (regression coefficient B = -0.013, p = 0.011). Conclusion: In our research we found that the higher intensity of psychotic manifestations in schizophrenia was accompanied with the smaller area and the perimeter of left caudate head as well as the smaller perimeter of the head of right caudate nucleus. The finding of the dependence of the intensity of psychotic manifestations on the perimeter of the right caudate head and not on its area speaks in favor of the caudate head surface deformations as one of the markers of intensity of psychotic manifestations in patients with schizophrenia

    The importance of timely ophthalmologic examination in preterm infants at risk of retinopathy occurrence

    Background/Aim. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a multifactorial disease in premature infants. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of ROP in children treated at the Center of Neonatology, Pediatric Clinic, Clinical Center in Kragujevac, Serbia. Methods. The study covered all children with birth weight below 2,000 g and/or gestational age below the 37th week, who from June 2006 to December 2009 underwent ophthalmological examination for ROP. The results of fundoscopy were classified in accordance with the International Classification of ROP. The treatment of infants and those with ROP was conducted in accordance with the early treatment of ROP study recommendations. We analyzed gestational age, birth weight and postconceptional age in two groups: healthy infants and those with severe form of ROP. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS 16. Results. A total of 478 children met the criteria of screening for ROP. Severe stage of ROP, which required laser treatment, had 102 (21.3%) children. Out of the infants with severe ROP 14 (13.7%) of the infants with APD had aggressive posterior disease, while two (0.4%) remained blind. The differences in the mean values of gestational age between the healthy and the children with severe form of the disease were statistically significant (p < 0.0005). The mean value of gestational age for the healthy children was 33.33 ± 2.28 weeks and for the seek infants 30.66 ± 2.79 weeks. The mean value of the weight in healthy children was 1.981 ± 407 g, and in sick children 1.535 ± 434 g which was statistically significant (p < 0.0005). Multivariate binary logistic regression showed that the occurrence of the disease depends on body weight and gestational age. Conclusion. The incidence of severe forms of ROP was 21.3%. Aggressive form of ROP was present in 13.7% of the children. The cut-off value for body weight was 1.740 g, and for gestationl age 32.5 weeks

    A framework for Comminution Circuits Design evaluation using grey compromise programming

    Comminution process, particularly grinding, is very important in the mineral processing industry. Some characteristics of ore particles, which occur as a product of grinding process, have a significant impact on the effects of further ore processing. At the same time, this process requires a significant amount of energy and also significantly affects the overall processing costs. Therefore, in this paper, we propose new multiple criteria decision making model based on grey compromise programming for adequate comminution circuit design selection. Although it is based on a simple procedure, we consider that the proposed model is efficient and flexible, and that it also represents the basis for forming more sophisticated models for comminution circuit design selection, as in addition, many other decision making problems in business environment, which is characterized by predictions and uncertainty

    Genetic Aspects of Micronutrients Important for Inflammatory Bowel Disease

    Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are complex diseases whose etiology is associated with genetic and environmental risk factors, among which are diet and gut microbiota. To date, IBD is an incurable disease and the main goal of its treatment is to reduce symptoms, prevent complications, and improve nutritional status and the quality of life. Patients with IBD usually suffer from nutritional deficiency with imbalances of specific micronutrient levels that contribute to the further deterioration of the disease. Therefore, along with medications usually used for IBD treatment, therapeutic strategies also include the supplementation of micronutrients such as vitamin D, folic acid, iron, and zinc. Micronutrient supplementation tailored according to individual needs could help patients to maintain overall health, avoid the triggering of symptoms, and support remission. The identification of individuals’ genotypes associated with the absorption, transport and metabolism of micronutrients can modify future clinical practice in IBD and enable individualized treatment.     The Granule Size Mediates the In Vivo Foreign Body Response and the Integration Behavior of Bone Substitutes

    The physicochemical properties of synthetically produced bone substitute materials (BSM) have a major impact on biocompatibility. This affects bony tissue integration, osteoconduction, as well as the degradation pattern and the correlated inflammatory tissue responses including macrophages and multinucleated giant cells (MNGCs). Thus, influencing factors such as size, special surface morphologies, porosity, and interconnectivity have been the subject of extensive research. In the present publication, the influence of the granule size of three identically manufactured bone substitute granules based on the technology of hydroxyapatite (HA)-forming calcium phosphate cements were investigated, which includes the inflammatory response in the surrounding tissue and especially the induction of MNGCs (as a parameter of the material degradation). For the in vivo study, granules of three different size ranges (small = 0.355–0.5 mm; medium = 0.5–1 mm; big = 1–2 mm) were implanted in the subcutaneous connective tissue of 45 male BALB/c mice. At 10, 30, and 60 days post implantationem, the materials were explanted and histologically processed. The defect areas were initially examined histopathologically. Furthermore, pro- and anti-inflammatory macrophages were quantified histomorphometrically after their immunohistochemical detection. The number of MNGCs was quantified as well using a histomorphometrical approach. The results showed a granule size-dependent integration behavior. The surrounding granulation tissue has passivated in the groups of the two bigger granules at 60 days post implantationem including a fibrotic encapsulation, while a granulation tissue was still present in the group of the small granules indicating an ongoing cell-based degradation process. The histomorphometrical analysis showed that the number of proinflammatory macrophages was significantly increased in the small granules at 60 days post implantationem. Similarly, a significant increase of MNGCs was detected in this group at 30 and 60 days post implantationem.     Knowledge gaps about mixed forests : What do European forest managers want to know and what answers can science provide?

    Research into mixed-forests has increased substantially in the last decades but the extent to which the new knowledge generated meets practitioners' concerns and is adequately transmitted to them is unknown. Here we provide the current state of knowledge and future research directions with regards to 10 questions about mixed forest functioning and management identified and selected by a range of European forest managers during an extensive participatory process. The set of 10 questions were the highest ranked questions from an online prioritization exercise involving 168 managers from 22 different European countries. In general, the topics of major concern for forest managers coincided with the ones that are at the heart of most research projects. They covered important issues related to the management of mixed forests and the role of mixtures for the stability of forests faced with environmental changes and the provision of ecosystem services to society. Our analysis showed that the current scientific knowledge about these questions was rather variable and particularly low for those related to the management of mixed forests over time and the associated costs. We also found that whereas most research projects have sought to evaluate whether mixed forests are more stable or provide more goods and services than monocultures, there is still little information on the underlying mechanisms and trade-offs behind these effects. Similarly, we identified a lack of knowledge on the spatio-temporal scales at which the effects of mixtures on the resistance and adaptability to environmental changes are operating. Our analysis may help researchers to identify what knowledge needs to be better transferred and to better design future research initiatives meeting practitioner's concerns.Peer reviewe

    CORRELATION ANALYSIS BETWEEN DEPRESSIVE MANIFESTATIONS AND MORPHOLOGICAL LESION CHARACTERISTICS IN PATIENTS WITH STROKE

    Introduction: Knowledge of etiopathogenesis of post-stroke depressive phenomena contributes to early diagnostics which shortens recovery to a great extent and suits the social and professional rehabilitation of patients, if followed by proper psycho/pharmacotherapy. The aim of this work is to research dependence of depressive manifestations considering the size and anatomical localization of lesion. Subjects and Methods: The research included 118 patients with stroke. Lesion localization was defined on computerized axial tomography records, whereas the area and perimeter of lesion were measured by AutoCAD 2004 software. Examinations by means of Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression were carried out by the method of random selection 11–40 days after stroke. Correlation analysis was made by simple linear/nonlinear regression and Cox’s hazard regression model. Results: Negative correlation was observed between the intensity of depressive manifestations and the size of cerebrovascular lesion (Spearman’s r= – 0.263, P= 0.004). By means of Cox’s regression model we determined 4.389 times higher risk for depression occurrence in female patients (P< 0.001), as well as higher risk due to lobus limbicus structure damages (hazard ratio eb(HR) = 2.661, P= 0.019). Conclusion: Lower intensity of depressive manifestations with larger cerebrovascular lesions, we have explained by activation of reparation mechanisms with energy savings and decrease (due to neurological deficits) of afferent peripheral sensations which antecedent the occurrence of emotions (James-Lange peripheral theory of emotions)

    Integration of EuroGeoss Applications to Enhance the Research Methods in the Region

    Abstract. This paper represents research related to the climate and climate changes in Macedonia and worldwide. The paper described climate events in the past and today, emphasizing the efforts of researchers and institutions dealing with such climatic changes and disasters. Macedonia, as a developing country has not yet achieved significant results related to the climate, so this study actually represents the introduction and integration of new tools and services in Macedonia which are used by worldwide institutions for research, prediction and reduction of those change. The key points in our research are: to review the available applications and explain the process and methods with which the data will be edited, stored, standardized, multimedia displayed and published. Our main goal is to describe the services and tools to standardize data from surveys and use all opportunities that can be use by these organizations. The creation of such a work in environment, improves the climate picture in Macedonia, and will be driving force of climate researchers and institutions
